Electrical Testing and CertificationsAt Basingstoke Electrician Service, we believe that all electrical systems should be properly tested to ensure safety at all time. As part of our services, your residential electrician will provide electrical certificates and appliance testing for homes, offices, commercial and industrial buildings.
Electrical devices have the potential to be dangerous. It is likely that incorrect installation or ageing components of both fixed and portable appliances can put the safety of those using them at risk. These risks could be fatal if a fire breaks out or a user is electrocuted. Fixed electrical devices are those wired into the mains electricity through a fused outlet. Examples of these include boilers and electric ovens. Portable electrical appliances are those not hard wired into walls and can generally be moved more easily. These appliances have a plug that allows connection to the electricity supply such as toasters, kettles and lamps. |
We provide EIC, EICR and PAT testing
Just contact us if you need any of the following:
Electrical installation Certificates (EIC) are important as they provide evidence that fixed electrical fittings, which are newly installed or modified, are safe for people to use at the time of installation. EICs must be issued upon the installation of an electrical fitting.
An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a different type of certification. This documentation is provided after the assessment of electrical installations within a property. This assessment must be undertaken by a qualified electrician.
Landlords and businesses have a requirement by law to ensure that electrical appliances are safe to use and although generally an EICR is not explicitly a requirement, it ensures businesses and landlords are acting within the law. The exception to this is for Houses of Multiple Occupancy (HMOs) for which an EICR must be carried out every five years.
Furthermore, for both landlords and businesses, EICRs may be necessary to access insurance products which are legally required. Even if not required as part of insurance criteria, evidence of regular testing, certifications and safe electrical practices may lead to a cheaper quote for said insurance products.

PAT Appliance Testing
PAT stands for portable appliance testing and is the routine assessment of the safety of mobile electrical devices. This includes that of larger appliances such as heaters, fridges, TV’s despite the fact that they usually remain in one place in the home or business.
The PAT testing process involves a visual assessment as well as a more detailed assessment of the appliances using dedicated PAT equipment designed to provide a reliable safety evaluation. The process is designed to screen for a variety of important electrical processes including earth continuity, the resistance of insulation and lead polarity. This test is important for landlords ensuring the safety of tenants, and businesses to ensure the safety of their employees and customers. |
Since the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, it is a requirement that the safety of electrical appliances is maintained if they have the potential to cause harm. Similarly to that of EICR certification, these regulations do not specify which testing needs to be carried out. That said, ensuring that appropriate appliances are regularly PAT tested, landlords and business owners can be confident they are behaving in line with the law. This differs however, for HMO landlords who are required to conduct PAT testing annually.
